The APWELL project sought to improve agricultural production through controlled groundwater exploitation by the means of nearly 3,500 wells and irrigation systems. The project acknowledged the risk of over-exploitation of groundwater.Part of the solution was to only permit wells in areas that were not already over-exploited. Recharge of groundwater and increasing irrigation efficiency were also implemented.

Preventing groundwater abuse depends on the users' knowledge of what constitutes this over-exploitation and abuse, and why it is undesirable. The success of APWELL, therefore, depends on participatory hydrological monitoring in which the users were trained in basic hydrology and charged with monitoring the hydrological balance of the watershed. In addition to quantity, APWELL has also been focusing on drinking quality, as the project found that many farmers depend on irrigation borewells  for their  drinking water.

Dear Sir,

We have a borewell in our constructed house in Mailardevpally Village, Rajendra Nagar, Hyderabad. We rely only on the borewell water for daily needs. In October 2011, we got the water tested from Vision Lab and were told that the water is not suitable for drinking. I seek advice and suggestions from the experts for the following questions:

Hello,

I am considering an 8 acre property with drip irrigation, according to the seller the land is sustained by a borewell with 2.5 inches water.  Does that sound adequate?  I feel it is not enough to even pump it up, but the seller insists thats very good by Indian standards, need information on this.

In this article, Seetha Gopalakrishnan introduces us to the Rain Centre and it activities in Chennai with respect to storm water construction in the city

One of the most conspicuous activities in the preparation for the monsoons in several cities today is dug up roads ! Crores and crores are spent on the construction of storm water drains alongside roads in cities and towns to prevent flooding during the rains. These channels / tunnels, that stretch for several kilometers, winding its way across the city, are expected to channel all the collected water into the nearest water body, say a lake or a river.
