I tried sending a suggestion to Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to tackle the urgent crisis in Karnataka this hot summer but didn't get any reply. Water crisis is a serious issue. When people do not have water to irrigate their lands, to drink for themselves, it pains me in the heart to see people wasting water profusely to wash their vehicles which goes down the drain. Manjunath M P presents the letter he sent to the Chairman, BWSSB.

Dear Chairman BWSSB,

This summer is very hot in Bangalore and there is drought in North Karnataka. People should be conscious of using water, and unfortunately many citizens misuse the Kaveri water being supplied to them to wash cars, bikes and the entrances of their houses. Hence there is a serious need to have a drive for people to be made aware of saving water by not misusing it.

We dug a borewell on 17th March 2012 on a vacant plot of 30x40 at BDA Layout, BSK V Stage, Uttarahalli, Bangalore. The digging was stopped at 863 ft. as there was no noticeable water strikes (as the dust suggested that it was a huge single rock till 863 ft., and there was little noticeable moisture in the dust produced). MS pipe was inserted upto 32 ft.

Settlements in the area that is now Bangalore have a recorded history that dates back to the 5th century CE. Water for these settlements was made available through multiple series of tanks, which numbered 19,800 around the year 1830.

This lake system is now decaying with lakes either taken over for urban uses, or choking due to neglect. ATREE and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) have been engaged in attempting to understand how to restore these lakes for urban use, while maintaining their ecological importance. This article in Seminar describes this attempt.

Ours is a residential apartment complex consisting of 600 apartments. Before this complex was built, the land was a coconut grove served by a large open well about 80 feet depth & about 45 feet dia. The builder after completion of the complex (10 years back) retained this open well as one of the water sources & drilled additional six bore wells to meet the total water requirement. The efficiency of borewells have reduced and the inflow to the well is also getting reduced.

Dear team,

Good day to you. We are having an acre of land in Arasapura village of Koratagere taluk in Tumkur district. Recently we dug a tube well of 480 feet and the casing was only for 80 feet and the water was spotted at 250 feet.

Now we have purchased a submersible motor of 10 hp and pump of 14 hp. The depth of submersible motor and the pump is 400 feet.

Initial 30 to 40 minutes the water pumps with high pressure, after that the water pumping decreases to half. Kindly tell me what exactly is the problem.

Domestic water is primarily a women’s burden and disproportionately impacts women and the girl-child in multiple ways. Therefore, promoting gender equity is an important facet of Arghyam’s work. The projects are spread across all geographies – deserts, mountains, flood-prone regions, rain-fed, coastal and tribal areas, representing the diversity in the country.
