This document includes guidelines to be followed for the conservation of tigers in buffer and core area of tiger reserves

This document is a guideline provided by the National Tiger Conservation Authority, under the Ministry of Environment and Forest. These guidelines are to be followed for the conservation of tigers in buffer and core area of tiger reserves. Further it also lays down the normative standards for tourism activities in tiger reserves.

With a brief background to the ongoing scheme called "Project Tiger", that aims to protect tigers as their population is gradually coming down, the guideline moves on to elaborate on the present status of tigers-the reason for the decline as reported by the country wide assessment. The document then elaborates on various aspects of tiger conservation under the following sections:

  • Management effectiveness evaluation of tiger reserves
  • General reasons for tiger decline in areas outside tiger reserves
  • Present approach to tiger conservation
  • Milestone Initiatives taken for strengthening tiger conservation
