Our mission is to inform and catalyse conservation and natural resource management, while promoting and supporting sustainable livelihoods, social development and environmental justice. We adopt interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approaches in our research and interventions, drawing from the fields of ecology, conservation biology, sociology, economics, and law. Dakshin is hiring a Senior Programme Associate (SPA), Governance - Andaman & Nicobar Islands under its SeaChange initiative. This long-term position (with a 6-month probationary period) will be based at our ANET field station in Wandoor, South Andaman. In this role, you will undertake research and design interventions on governance issues, while working with Panchayati Raj institutions, government officials, fishers, youth and women to strengthen local governance systems across the islands.
Key responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of this position will include the following:
1. Undertake primary and secondary research on local governance systems and legal and policy implementation of the A&N Islands, analyse data and write reports.
2. Develop training modules and facilitate legal capacity building workshops for various stakeholders.
3. Assist in planning, strategising and implementing interventions, in collaboration with other programmatic teams, to strengthen local governance systems of the islands.
4. Liaise with stakeholders (including youth, women, community leaders, local organisations, government officials, PRI members) as required for the interventions
5. Build capacities of Panchayati Raj institutions, youth and women
Candidates must possess the following qualifications and skills:
1. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in law/public policy/social work/development studies/natural resource management or similar fields.
2. Minimum three years of relevant experience working on legal and governance issues.
3. Fluency in English (spoken and written) and Hindi (spoken).
4. Proven ability to work in collaboration with diverse stakeholders and teams.
5. Proven ability to stay in a rural field site for an extended duration.
Please note that this position requires candidates to be based in the Andaman and Nicobar islands for at least 10 months of the year. Preferential requirements:
1. Experience in working with rural communities, and government officials.
2. Knowledge of Bengali/Telugu will be an advantage.
3. Candidates with two-wheeler driving experience and holding a valid driver's license will be preferred.
