Job Description:
We are looking for a Programme Assistant (PA) to support our ongoing work under the Sustainable Fisheries and Livelihoods programme. The project focuses on the socio-economic implications of unsustainable diversion of fisheries bycatch to produce fish meal and fish oil (FMFO) for the poultry and aquaculture sector.
The role primarily involves assisting the team to build evidence on the ecological, socioeconomic, and nutritional implications of the FMFO sector in Karnataka/Tamil Nadu. The PA will also help in understanding grassroots-level stakeholder dynamics and identifying potential areas for transformation in the system.
Key Responsibilities:
The Programme Assistant will support the team in carrying out the following tasks:
1. Conduct primary and secondary data collection, including bycatch monitoring, surveys, interviews, and focused group discussions, etc
2. Assist with data analysis and synthesis..
3. Assist community-based long-term fisheries catch monitoring at project sites alongside field staff and community interns.
4. Assist in building a network with potential stakeholders and collaborators.
5. Assist with organising stakeholder meetings at the project sites
6. Organise and participate in community engagement activities, as required.
7. Support the development of publications and reports, and assist in outreach.
Candidates must possess the following qualifications/skills
1. Minimum qualification of Master’s degree in either of the following fields - Marine Biology/Environmental Science/Social Work/ Economics, or a related field.
2. Strong language proficiency in English and any of the local languages of the field sites - Tamil/Tulu/ Kannada (spoken and written).
3. Willingness to stay at remote coastal field sites for extended periods (accommodation will be provided by the organisation).
4. Good interpersonal and conversational skills.
5. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in diverse field settings.
Desirable skills:
1. Prior experience in community engagement or participatory research methods.
2. Familiarity with data entry, analysis software, or qualitative/quantitative research tools, such as KOBO. NVIVO, R, Atlas.ti, QGIS.
3. A sound understanding of the fisheries sector and allied coastal livelihoods
