Press release: Indian event at Cancun re-emphasises importance of equity, 7th December 2010

India hosted a major event at the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference at Cancun, where the critical issue of equity and equitable access to carbon space was emphasised. 

India's Minister for Environment and Forests and Head of Delegation, Shri Jairam Ramesh personally chaired the side event that had presentations by Prof. T. Jayaraman, Tata Inst. Of Social Sciences, India, Mr. Martin Khor, Executive Dir., South Centre, Geneva and Dr. Harald, ERC & Univ. Of Cape Town, South Africa.

Indian minister's statement at Cancun: Transcript of speech of Environment Minister Shri Jairam Ramesh at the United Nations Climate Change Conference at Cancun, 8th December 2010

In his speech the environment minister Shri Jairam Ramesh emphasised India’s profound vulnerabilities to climate change, emphasised India's commitment to Environmental issues and provided an update on the actions undertaken and targets set to respond to this challenge in a proactive manner such as:

• Reduction in the emission intensity of India’s GDP by 20-25% by the year 2020 on a 2005 reference level
• Diversification of energy fuel mix
• Developing startegies for Forestry and coastal management
• Establishment of an elaborate Indian Network for Comprehensive Climate Change Assessment—an Indian IPCC
• Forming partnerships with other countries to deal with climate change
