To create awareness on water quality issues with a specific focus on fluoride contamination in groundwater sources, Schools Water Portal and Oracle Education Foundation are partnering on a nationwide programme that engages middle and high school students from across the country in a water quality testing, analysis and reporting exercise for fluoride in groundwater.
The project aims to give students practical exposure to a problem that affects 6.6 crore people in 19 states in India. It complements the syllabus which touches on very broad aspects of water contamination in India. We also hope that a simple test for fluoride in water will spark interesting discussions on water quality in a classroom and students will learn more about this issue.
How to participate
Schools that register for this project will be provided with a water quality testing kit that can test 30 samples of water for the presence of fluoride. Students and teachers can refer to the learning resources and instructions provided on the Schools Water Portal for more details on how to test water for fluoride using the provided kit. Each sample of water can be tested in less than 2 minutes. The results of these 30 tests need to be uploaded here before 29th February 2012.
200 water quality testing kits will be sent free of cost to schools that register on a first come first serve basis. Kindly register your school here.
Schools in Bangalore interested in participating in this project must register and collect the water quality testing kit from Arghyam's office (address below) between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Schools in Bangalore can email us at schools.indiawaterportal.org or call Arghyam (telephone number below) to confirm when they will be picking up the kit from our office.
