An analysis of Census 2011 data confirms many known facts--the urban beats the rural when it comes to treated tap water supply, access to water testing labs and much more.

Sixty eight percent of India's population lives in rural areas but when it comes to facilities -- including the availability of safe drinking water -- cities and towns corner most of them. Investments to rural India increased from Rs 31,356 crore (2002-07) to Rs 89,150 crore (2007-12) but this hasn't helped bridge the gap.

Hi,

What are the points to be borne in mind while deciding between an openwell and a borewell for a 7.5 acre farm in Dhoni district, Palakkad , Kerala. This farm has a small stream near by. But in summer the stream goes dry. There is no power supply there and hence we plan to use an oil pump .

If anyone can suggest the difference between the two wells it will be a great help. Also any suggestons on deciding a contractor to dig a well to ensure they dig at a place where water is available?

Hi

There is a huge ground water problem in a village in Palakkad called Nemmara. I believe that it is due to the complete lack of knowledge of the villagers on harvesting rain water and ensuring that the natural water collection methods like ponds etc., are kept open. The village which has a higher percentage of elderly living are finding it very difficult to cope. Palakkad is hilly, no doubt, but does receive rain in abundance. Would appreciate if someone could let me know how to reach out to Mr. Mishra so that he could help with a viable solution

Warm regards,

I am from Palakkad District in Kerala. My house is near the Bharathapuzha river. We dug a well around 4 years back and have plenty of water even in peak summer. We had clear water in the first year. But after the first monsoon when the water level went low in summer we found a greenish layer developing atop the water. Now if you look into the well you can not see water but a green layer only. But as the water is clear, no odour, tastes natural we still drink it. The greenish layer disappears when the well gets full in monsoon.

I have a question regarding how to reduce the salinity of water. I reside in the district of Palakkad Dist., Kerala. Our house uses well water as well as bore water when the season is summer. The problem is the water is a bit saline and hard. I want to know how to reduce or mitigate the hard water effect? So kindly provide me with some solution as after i started to stay in Mumbai i feel the difference more when i go home.
