Udupi in Karnataka, sets standard for water management

Udupi in coastal Karnataka had an old and leaking water supply infrastructure, sourcing water from myriad open wells apart from borewells. Today it leads the way by pumping river water to reservoirs which, in turn, feeds overhead tanks by gravity, thereby providing over 60 per cent of the town’s households daily water supply, reducing leakages and improving collections.

Gary R Watmough’s PhD explored the spatial associations between socioeconomic variables like female literacy and employment in the non-agricultural sector derived from a subset of the 2001 Indian National Census and environmental metrics. The study was based on freely available remotely sensed satellite sensor data - Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) in Assam.

Past studies have found associations between land and poverty, however these studies are usually focused on small areas using ground based studies. This research explored and quantified associations between socioeconomic conditions derived from national census data and environmental metrics derived from remotely sensed imagery from Earth observation satellites on an extensive spatial scale, covering over 14000 villages in Assam in north-east India.

(Query received over email from Dr. Pranjit Kumar Sarma)

I would like to introduce myself as Dr. Pranjit Kumar Sarma, Program Head of GIS Program of Aaranyak, a society for biodiversity conservation in North East India.

I need the rainfall data of the North Eastern states for the last 100 years if it is available with India Water Portal. We need this data for assessment of soil erosion and also for climate change analysis using GIS. I will be grateful if we get the data and also assure that due acknowledgement will be given to India Water Portal.

This working paper published by the Institute of Green Economy (IGREC) describes the traditional rice growing practices of the Apatani tribes in Arunachal Pradesh.

It also deals with the threat to the biodiversity in the area due to climate changes and argues for the need to devise adaptation strategies at an urgent level to preserve the unique genetic variability of the region and the indigenous knowledge of farming practices in the area.
