Navigation on the Ganga - how was it in the past, what is the situation currently and what does the future hold?

Spending a week on a cramped boat with five strangers may not sound like fun to many but it was a dream come true for me. When I found a note in my inbox that said ”I want to travel down part of the Ganga by boat. Would you know of anyone who is interested”? , I jumped at the chance and set off on an unforgettable journey with five others. We travelled on a little rowboat that was about 20 feet long, cooked our meals in it, and camped at night. Truly unforgettable.

This article by Rina Mukherjee describes the efforts made by the non governmental organisation Nature mates to restore Bikramgarh Jheel in Kolkata

In a city where land prices are climbing up by the day, and homes must be constructed for a growing population on scarce land, water-bodies are falling prey to the avaricious schemes of land-sharks. But as water-bodies disappear, groundwater levels fall. Realising the need to act before it is too late, a citizens group and a non-governmental organisation - Nature Mates - have managed to restore the badly mauled Bikramgarh Jheel  in Kolkata.

Dear Mr. /Mrs,

We produce mobile water filters (see attachment), mainly for disaster aid. Some of these filters, we like to test for bacterial reduction. For that purpose we are looking for a laboratory in Kolkata (West Bengal) who can do these kind of tests. Can you please connect us to such a lab in Kolkata? Hope to hearing from you soon.

With best regards
