QUESTION
Is water getting wasted during the sewage treatment process in our apartment in Bangalore ?

(Query received over email from Sushil Kumar)

Hi,

I am part of a large apartment complex in Bangalore. I am interested in understanding the volume of water that generally gets wasted during the treatment process. We are made to understand from our 'managers' that it is significant and hence it is big part of our overall water costs.

Our basic question is that our Property management system (PMS) provider is telling us that around 30%-40% of the water gets wasted during the treatment process. This means that if we consider actual consumption of around 150 litres per person per day + 25 litres per person per day for horticulture (we have extensive gardens), we have to consider buying 175 / 0.67 = approx 260 litres per person per day and this is killing us in the current market. Assuming that sewage treatment is able to regenerate and reuse 40%, the entire benefit of this goes to wastage during the treatment process as per our PMS.

Hence, we would like to verify if this is true.

Thanks and regards,

Sushil Kumar
