India Water Portal is looking for an experienced visual designer who can turn ideas, stories and information about water, environment and communities into engaging, accessible and thoughtful visual communication. This is a hands-on design role that will work closely with the India Water Portal editorial team. The designer will help translate editorial ideas into the formats that communicate them best, whether that is a social media carousel, infographic, reel, newsletter graphic, website cover image or another digital format. The primary focus of the role will be India Water Portal, across both its English and Hindi content. From time to time, the designer will also support design requirements for Arghyam.
Work closely with the editorial, writing and copy-editing teams to translate stories, ideas and information into strong visual communication.
Design content for India Water Portal’s social media channels, including carousels, static posts, infographics, illustrations and other formats suited to the message.
Create and edit short-form video content, including reels, teasers and simple social videos.
Design visual assets for India Water Portal’s day-to-day editorial needs, including newsletter headers, website cover images, article graphics, campaign creatives and other digital assets.
Create designs for both English and Hindi content, with attention to readability, typography and visual consistency across languages.
Find ways to humanise stories about water and the environment while representing people, communities and their experiences accurately, sensitively and ethically.
Develop reusable templates and design systems that make regular editorial and social media production more efficient.
Support the design of event collaterals and visual assets for key events,
Occasionally support Arghyam with social media and other communication design needs.
At least 3-4 years of professional experience in graphic, editorial, digital or communication design.
A strong portfolio demonstrating work across digital, editorial and social media formats.
Experience in environmental storytelling, development communication, public-interest communication, climate, sustainability, water or related areas.
Sensitivity to how people and communities are represented visually, including an understanding of ethical storytelling and avoiding stereotypical, exploitative or tokenistic representation.
Strong understanding of typography, layout, hierarchy, colour and information design.
Experience designing social media carousels, infographics and other content-led formats.
Basic video editing and motion-design skills, including the ability to create or edit reels and short social videos.
Comfort working with both English and Hindi content, including designing effectively with Devanagari text.
Ability to collaborate closely with editors, writers and other team members and respond constructively to feedback.
Ability to manage multiple requirements and work to agreed timelines.
Strong attention to detail and visual consistency.
The candidate should be comfortable with a combination of professional and collaborative design tools, including:
Canva
Figma
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe InDesign
Premiere Pro, After Effects or other video and motion-design tools
We are less concerned about a particular combination of software than about strong design thinking, visual judgement and the ability to execute ideas well.
We are looking for someone who sees design as part of the editorial process. This role requires creative thinking, editorial sensitivity and the willingness to handle the everyday design requirements of a busy digital publication.
