Transparent Chennai aggregates, creates and disseminates data and research about important civic issues facing Chennai, including those issues facing the poor. Transparent Chennai's goal is to enable residents, especially the poor, to have a greater voice in planning and city governance.

Position description: Researcher and outreach worker

We are looking to hire a Tamil speaking researcher and outreach worker for a project on the waste sector in Chennai with particular focus on the informal workers in the sector. The position is for the duration of the project, a period of approximately 4-6 months and starts immediately.

Responsibilities

  • Identifying and meeting with stakeholders in the waste management sector (formal and informal).
  • Field interviews and relationship building with actors in the sector.
  • Translation of documents from Tamil to English.
  • Meeting with officers and staff of the Chennai Corporation.
  • Collecting and documenting data on the actors, policies and practices in the waste sector in Chennai.
  • Assisting in organising meetings of stakeholders.
  • Advocating for a sustainable zero waste management model which takes into account the informal sector through outreach work.

The position offers the opportunity to gain first-hand field experience on urban governance and invaluable experience in futures planning.

Requirements

  • Fluency in spoken Tamil and ability to understand and translate official Tamil documents.
  • Good written English skills for documenting purposes
  • Motivation to do field work and willingness to travel within the city.
  • Ability to converse with strangers and conduct in-depth interviews in a sensitive manner.
