The sanctuary wildlife awards were instituted to recognise the best in the field of wildlife conservation and to celebrate the unsung heroes of India who are defending her wildernesses and consequently safeguarding her food and water security.

The award categories includes:

• Lifetime service award - An individual whose life has been devoted to the protection of wildlife species or their habitats on the Indian subcontinent
• Wildlife service awards - Individuals currently working in the field who have displayed extraordinary courage, dedication and determination in the field of wildlife conservation
• Wildlife photography awards - Images taken in the wild that best depict Sanctuary’s descriptor: ‘Call of the Wild’
• Green teacher award - An individual currently working to communicate wildlife and conservation values to students in Indian schools or colleges
• Young naturalist awards - Individuals between the ages of 16 and 25 on December 31, 2011, who show extraordinary caring and respect for nature
• Wind under the wings award - An Indian organisation that has supported an individual who has made a difference
