Everyday more than 1000 children die of preventable, water related diseases in India. At least 30 million people don’t have access to safe drinking water in urban India, and 40 million live in slums without adequate sanitation facilities. And the situation is only going to worsen. Water is likened to oil, only much more central to our very lives and well-being. Globally, it is increasingly being seen as the burning issue of this century. 

Arghyam, a leading national charitable foundation has dedicated itself to the cause of the poorest citizens through the cause of water. Setup with a private endowment from writer and philanthropist Rohini Nilekani, Arghyam’s mission is “Safe, sustainable water for all”.  For more than 4 years now, Arghyam has been driving and supporting programs in rainwater harvesting, groundwater management, drinking water and sanitation programs, water quality management etc. by working closely with diverse multiple stakeholders—NGOs and government. Being small and independent, Arghyam is highly flexible, with an ability to move quickly, absorb risk and support exciting, innovative ideas. Arghyam has partners in 14 states in more than 57 projects. 

We are looking for a dynamic individual to join team Arghyam in Bangalore as Project Officer (Communications & Advocacy). 

Title: 
Project officer (Communications & Advocacy)
Full-time position, based in Bangalore

Academic Qualifications: 
Degree in Water resources, environmental, or civil engineering is desirable. Degree/Diploma in Communications, or related subject from a reputed University, will be a plus.

Experience:  
Minimum 5 years of experience in advocacy, development communications and networking in any of the organizations like Non-profit, Research and Multilateral agencies. Understanding of water & sanitation sector and its policies, knowledge and experience of different processes involved in communication & advocacy are essential. 

Job Functions: 
The Project officer will have the responsibility to work with diverse teams in Arghyam and report to the Programme Manager (Communications & Advocacy) and work towards implementing team’s annual plan. The team is headed by Director (Communications & Advocacy).

The following are the roles and responsibilities for this position.

  • Ability to research and extrapolate advocacy material from various internal and partner projects 
  • Proactively keep abreast of current developments in the sector and assess the impact on Arghyam’s projects
  • Designing and producing communication [written, audio-visual, internet based] packages. This will also require writing, editing and publishing content for use in internal publications (annual reports, etc.) and external media (press releases, policy briefs, etc.)
  • Coordinate with vendors involved in production of communication materials 
  • Based on external advocacy interactions, provide inputs into internal and partner projects 
  • Network to facilitate information exchange and dialogue across different stakeholder groups in the sector 
  • Organising advocacy events, meetings, conferences etc

Skills Required:

  • Analytical skills in interpreting data and information 
  • Great attention to detail and highly organized
  • Excellent & creative written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge on production and dissemination of communication materials

Personal Attributes:  

Excellent interpersonal skills, with proven ability to work independently, as a self-starter, and in a multi disciplinary, fast-paced team environment are essential. An understanding of development issues in India preferably based on a sense of the political economy of the country, a strong intellectual and personal commitment towards social justice and the place of women in society. The candidate must share the team’s passion to make a difference and give back to society, with this as the prime motivation to consider Arghyam.
