Objective
The goal of the proposed Training Course is to educate the water resource managers (both researchers and practitioners) about the importance of environmental flows in the broader framework of aquatic ecosystem goods and services, and the approaches and methods for EF assessments.
The specific objective of the training workshop is to bring together researchers in the field of river ecosystems and the water resource managers (from different disciplines) for intensive interaction on all scientific, socio-economic, policy and institutional issues concerning environmental flow and to discuss
the requirements for assessment and implementation of the EF in water resource management projects. Another objective is to develop an outline of the course material on the subject that is appropriate for the region. The training course will include interactive discussion besides a series of lectures. Resource material will be provided.

Structure of the course
The training course will include the following:

  • A series of Lectures cover all aspects of EF, followed by interaction with the speaker
  • Presentation of examples and case studies for detailed discussion
  • Interaction with participants of the Symposium
  • Field visit to appreciate the importance of Flows/ impacts of lack of Flows

Training Module
Tentatively, the topics to be covered are;

  • Introduction to river ecosystems and their good and services
  • Impacts of flow alteration on river ecosystems
  • The concept of Environmental Flows
  • Economic, socio-cultural and livelihood impacts of flow alteration
  • Methods of EF Assessment - Hydrological, Hydraulic, habitat Simulation and Holistic methods and their variants, with a discussion of their relative merits
  • Case studies from the region

The training will comprise of

  • Invited Lectures by experts on rivers and aquatic ecosystems, environmental flows,
  • Offered presentations and case studies from the region
  • Presentations from the trainee participants about their experiences
  • Field visit and discussion on the field observations

Who should attend
The course is targeted at early to mid-career Professionals, Policy makers and Researchers (both Government and Corporate sectors) in the area of Water Resources Management. They include individuals responsible for preparing DPRs, designing and implementation of hydropower projects and other water resource development projects, environmental consultants engaged in the area; researchers and educators in the fields of river ecology and riverine fisheries, water resource engineering and IWRM, and NGOs.

Geographic coverage
Individuals from all countries of South Asia are eligible for joining the training Course. However, the number of trainee participants will be limited to 30 only.

Six days (including one day field visit)

Course fee
Indian participants Rs. 12,000 before October 31, 2012 and Rs. 20,000 after November 1, 2012
Overseas Participants US$ 250 before October 31, 2012 and US$ 400 after November 1, 2012

The Course Fee includes: Course material and Background documents, copies of presentations, field trip, lunch , tea/coffee during breaks. The Fee does NOT include: Travel to the Venue & back (except field trip); Accommodation and meals other than specified above, and any other personal expenses.
