Photo Exhibit: Delhi's might, Renuka's plight - 26th Sept-2nd Oct

The School of Arts and Aesthetics, JNU is one of the few places in India that offers post-graduate degree courses in the theoretical and critical study of the cinematic, visual and performing arts. Moreover, it is the only place in India where these disciplines are offered in an integrated programme that allows students to understand the individual arts in a broader context of history, sociology, politics, semiotics, gender and cultural studies apart from being able to integrate the study of one art form with the other arts. The three streams of study offered at the school are Visual Studies, Theatre & Performance Studies and Cinema Studies.

Description:

The Renuka Dam Project proposed over the river Giri Ganga (a tributary of the Yamuna) located some 300 km away from Delhi, is a joint project of the Governments of Himachal Pradesh (HP) and Delhi, to be constructed by the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) in Sirmour district of HP. While HP hopes to generate 40MW of power from this project, Delhi hopes to meet 1250 MLD of its total 3500 MLD requirement from this project. It will supply 40 per cent of Delhi’s annual requirement.

Delhi has sufficient water resources to meet its present and future demand, but it looses 50 per cent of its water - 30 per cent as technical losses and the remaining through thefts and non-metered connections, absolute waste of rainwater, wasteful personal habits, polluted Yamuna and other disappearing water bodies.

The event that includes a photo exhibit is part of the awareness and support campaign to prevent the dam from becoming a reality. It is also aimed at a larger goal of water self sufficiency in Delhi, so no such criminal act could be proposed in future.
