India Water Portal (IWP) is the country's foremost digital repository on water and related issues. Launched in 2007, during the period of the National Knowledge Commission, the IWP was envisioned as an open, trusted knowledge website in English and Hindi, aiming to reach beyond metropolitan or English-speaking audiences alone. The Portal is run by Arghyam, a foundation set up by Rohini Nilekani in 2001 with a focus on water and sanitation.
The Tata Trusts, one of India’s leading philanthropic organisations working to address the country’s most pressing development challenges, have extended their support to IWP, to help expand its footprint and grow its efforts in informing, engaging and influencing the water community. IWP curates research, field insights, policy analysis, and community voices, helping build awareness and strengthen public discourse of India’s water ecosystem.
The three-year commitment by the Tata Trusts to support the next phase of the India Water Portal’s growth, is expected to significantly enhance the portal’s reach and impact. The support positions the platform to evolve into a true sectoral asset and India’s trusted, go-to knowledge resource, strengthening its role in informing and influencing the nation’s water future.
Arghyam continues to steward and fund India Water Portal as part of its long-standing vision of safe and sustainable water for all. Anuj Sharma, CEO, Arghyam, said, “The digital landscape has changed dramatically over the years, and the way we consume information and content has evolved significantly. Moving forward in partnership with a seasoned sectoral institution like the Tata Trusts strengthens our journey and our shared commitment to making knowledge freely accessible and easily consumable.”
Divyang Waghela, Head – Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WaSH) at Tata Trusts, commented, “To ensure water secure futures and self-reliant communities, we need strong systems. Strengthening access to credible water knowledge can help guide informed action, and India Water Portal serves as a critical resource to this end. Our support to deepen the Portal’s role as a public digital commons reflects our broader commitment to make water systems more resilient.”
A key feature of the initiative is building a national network of regional water storytelling fellows and this effort is already underway. In 2025, it identified its first cohort of fellows, exploring stories capturing lived realities from Jammu & Kashmir, the Northeast, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Some of these stories will be showcased in the form of an exhibit following a conversation on storytelling for water this World Water Day at Bangalore International Centre as an open public event.
The platform showcases broader policy and sector discourse alongside underrepresented stories, ranging from issues of glacial retreat and groundwater stress to practitioner-led innovations and community resilience. Through strategic partnerships with academic institutions, media platforms, and sector organisations, IWP, which continues to evolve and grow, can expand its reach and inform and strengthen the nation’s water resilience.
