The issue at stake in the Mahanadi basin is not one of Chhattisgarh vs Odisha, but one of agriculture vs industry.

The Mahanadi is the lifeline of the people of both Chhattisgarh and Odisha, as it the most important water source for the farmers and other citizens of both these states to meet their domestic and livelihood needs. Pondy ART’s photo biennale PondyPHOTO has water as its theme this year. Internationally acclaimed photographers are expected to exhibit their work at the event.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but more often than not, insightful pieces of art and photography find themselves confined to affluent salons and galleries. While employing art and photography to address social issues is common in the West, the concept of public art is still in its incipient stages here in India. High-quality thematic art and photo exhibits across the cities in the recent past have been promising. One such exhibition is the latest edition of Pondy ART’s photo biennale, PondyPHOTO.

Bhagirath Prayaas Samman was constituted in 2014 as an award to recognise efforts and initiatives for river conservation, in the first India Rivers Week jointly organised by Peace Institute, INTACH, Toxics Link, SANDRP and WWF-India. In India, numerous awards are given for excellent initiatives around water conservation, ut none on rivers. Also, often awards look at the quantifiable impacts on the water systems. Processes are not recognised.
