NGO survey says transgenders face harassment at Mumbai public toilets
A year-long study conducted by the NGO Pukar has revealed the ridicule and harassment the transgender community faces everyday while trying to access public toilets in Mumbai. While the Supreme Court has recognised the special status of the transgender community and has directed the state governments to construct separate public toilets for them, not much has changed on the ground. Members of the community continue to be harassed at public toilets for their gender and appearance. Of the 4.9 lakh individuals belonging to the third sex, 40,000 of them live in Maharashtra.
24/7 monitoring of sewage treatment plants in Bengaluru
The steady increase in the pollution of the lakes and cases of dead fish in the lakes due to it have driven the centre to consider putting 24/7 monitoring of all sewage treatment plants in Bengaluru. The enactment of an overarching law for lake preservation in the city is also under consideration. The union environment ministry has taken active interest in building local infrastructure and capacity as more than half of Bengaluru’s sewage ends up in its lakes.
Urban local bodies in WB to get stationary and mobile solid waste compactor machines
The West Bengal government has decided to provide all 125 urban local bodies in the state with stationary and mobile solid waste compactor machines for effective garbage management. Currently, 150 mobile compactors have been commissioned, out of which 100 are functional. Compactors enable longer use of dumping grounds as they reduce the overall volume of the accumulated waste in addition to being instrumental in reducing transportation costs.
Integrated project for solid waste in south Delhi
New Delhi’s south corporation has launched an integrated project for collection and transportation of solid waste in a bid to improve its Swachh Bharat standings. Corporation’s central zone and its 30 wards figure in the first list. The scheme will be extended to the other three zones after reviewing its initial progress. The corporation has put in place compactors and mobile collection centres to ensure maximum efficiency. Citizens have also been asked to segregate waste at source.
Elephants force authorities to build toilets in Jangalmahal region
Instances of marauding elephants targeting people who come out to defecate in the open have forced the West Bengal government to get its sanitation act together. Authorities have taken up toilet construction on a priority basis in three districts that constitute the Jangalmahal area in the state. Elephants are known to stray inside human settlements in the three districts of west Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia from Dolma Hills in neighbouring Jharkhand.
