South Delhi Municipal Corporation plans to regularise around 9400 safai karamcharis
The South Delhi Corporation has forwarded a proposal to regularise around 9400 safai karamcharis at the cost of Rs. 500 crore. The regularisation process would commence after the House passes the bill. This comes at a time when the Municipal Corporations of Delhi are struggling to pay the dues to their employees. The High Court had earlier directed the Corporations to clear all pending dues as recommended by the Third Delhi Finance Commission.
Smart public toilet complexes with rooftop solar panels and ATMs to come up in New Delhi
The Capital will soon sport smart solar-powered public toilets with a host of other facilities including ATMs, Wi-Fi connectivity and automatic vending machines. The first such complex is expected to come up in Rafi Marg. The New Delhi Municipal Council had invited design proposals for the city’s fully-loaded smart toilet complexes with modern amenities from architects and students in December last.
IIT-Kanpur suggests setting up of bio-toilets in Allahabad ahead of the Magh Mela
Authorities at the Indian Institute of Technology have forwarded proposals for setting up of bio-toilets in Allahabad under the Namami Gange project ahead of the Magh Mela to be held in the city in January 2016. Bio-toilets convert human excreta into methane and water in the presence of bacteria in a digester tank. These toilets would be the most environment friendly and appropriate option for huge events with massive crowds such as the Magh Mela as they consume less water and do not pollute the environment.
Improved sanitation raises Mizoram’s public health standings
Mizoram has recorded a 13% point decline in malnourishment and stunting among children in the recent past as a result of improved sanitation. It has been found that close to 92% households in the state have access to sanitation. Apart from improved sanitation, the Public Health Foundation of India has reported that nearly 522 million people gained access to improved sources of drinking water between 1990 and 2000.
75 lakh toilets out of the total target of 1.2 crore for the year ending already constructed: SBM (Gramin) Director
The Director of Swachh Bharat (Gramin) has disclosed that 75 lakh toilets out of the total 1.2 crore unit target this year ending, have already been constructed. While 2013-14 witnessed the construction of 50 lakh latrines, an additional 59 lakh units were built in 2014-15. However, toilet access is still a point of concern despite perceived improvements from the 2011 Census.
