Rainwater harvesting for the Bangalore Metro - A presentation by Biome Environmental Solutions Private Limited

This presentation introduces a plan for rainwater harvesting for the city of Bangalore

This presentation by Biome Environmental Solutions Private Limited introduces a plan for Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) for the city of Bangalore. The objectives of the plan include:

  • Harvesting all the rain falling on the viaduct
  • Preventing flooding at the base of piers
  • To ensure that the landscape can be maintained on rainwater alone

The RWH optimal design takes into consideration:
  • The cost factor in terms of capital as well as maintenance
  • Safety aspects of design
  • Locally appropriate design taking into consideration the hydrogeology of the area
  • Ease of maintenance

The plan draws on the rainfall data for Bangalore and calculates the potential for RWH in the city, also looks at the landscaping details and the water requirement of the area and compares it against the need and capacity of RWH to deliver water. The presentation describes the overall RWH recommendations based on the earlier background data, the geology and groundwater situation of Bangalore and estimated requirements of the landscape.

The presentation dwells on  models required to store water and the advantages and disadvantages of using each type that include:

  • Conventional brick masonry sump from which eis drawn from a bucket
  • HDPE/Concrete tank on platform in which water flows through gravity
  • Plastic egg crate like reservoir
  • Recharge well

The presentation provides the details of :

  • The current implementation for every two spans
  • Proposed implementation for every two soans
  • Proposed implementation for one span

The last part of the presentation dwells on the issue of maintenance of these structures constructed for RWH.
