Intergrated hydrological water data books - CWCIntegrated Hydrological Data Books are a compendium of important hydrological information of twelve non-classified basins (i.e., other than Ganga and Brahmaputra) consolidated at the national level by the Central Water Commission (CWC).

It covers basic hydrological data on gauge, discharge, silt, sedimentation and water quality collected on a regular basis by the CWC regional field offices, who document it in the form of a Water Year Book, Sediment Year Book and Water Quality Year Book. These along with the relevant land use statistics collected by the Ministry of Agriculture are integrated into this Data Book.

The information is of use to planners, researchers, policy makers and the public at large.

Hydrological Data Books

The Data Book for 2009 provides updated basin and site-wise data of 282 operational sites located on non-classified river basins covering aspects such as location, drainage area, population, temperature, average runoff, seasonal water flow, historical water levels, live storage capacity, annual flow of water into river basin, average sediment loads, water quality parameters and land use statistics. It also presents information on type of industries, principal minerals, type of climate and soil characteristics.

It contains time-series data for the period 1996-97 to 2006-07 at most places except where data is not available. However, there are some basins for which latest data are not available due to unavoidable reasons. The data are provided up to 2003-04 or 2004-05 or 2005-06 as the case may be. It provides data for the following sub-basins – Indus, Mahanadi, Subarnarekha-Burhabalang-Baitarani-Brahmani, Rushikulya-Vamsadhara-Sarada-Nagavali, Godavari, Krishna, Cauvery, east flowing rivers between Mahanadi to Kanyakumari, west flowing rivers from Kanyakumari to Tapi, Narmada, Mahi-Sabarmati & other west flowing rivers.

The report is organised thus:

  • Chapter 1 gives the introduction
  • Chapter 2 describes the physical features of river basins
  • Chapter 3 deals with water and related statistics covering storage capacity, salient features and flow of water
  • Chapter 4 presents the data on sedimentation
  • Chapter 5 has details on water quality parameters
  • Chapter 6 provides a summary of land use statistics related to the non-classified river basins

The Hydrological Data Book for the year 2006 and 2007 is also organised along similar lines.

Water Data Book

The Central Water Commission has also published a Water Data Book in 2005, which presents the following –

  • Rainfall in different meteorological sub divisions of the country during 2003
  • State-wise distribution of number of districts with excess, normal, deficient and scanty rainfall
  • Basin-wise distribution of estimated utilizable water, storage potential and runoff, storage capacity, catchment area, ground water potential, observed suspended load
  • State-wise details of inland fishery water resources of various types
  • Storage position of important reservoirs of India at the end of September 2003 and May 2004
  • Basin-wise details of hydrological observation stations of CWC
  • Status of ground water hydrograph network stations
  • State-wise categorization of blocks / talukas / mandals / watersheds as over-exploited and dark
  • State-wise distribution of large dams – Abstract
  • Estimated sector-wise requirement of water in India during 2025
  • Estimated annual requirement of water in India (by different uses)
  • Details of land-use, agriculture and irrigation
  • Command area development and Tribal sub-plan areas
  • Rural and urban water supply
  • Domestic product
  • Financial expenditure on irrigation projects
  • Flood management and drought

Water sector at a glance

Apart from the above, the CWC has also released 'Water sector at a glance' for the years 2007 (complete book) and 2008 (summary only). These books contain data on the water sector, organised under water and related resources, resources utilisation, production related performance and economic efficiency, financial performance and social and environmental performance, and have details about the following:

  • Precipation
  • Geographical area
  • Population
  • Rainfall
  • Water potential in rivers
  • Per capita water availability
  • Utilisable water
  • Storage capacity of reservoirs
  • Irrigation potential
  • Command area development programme
  • Land classification
  • Irrigated area
  • Net area irrigated
  • Area and production of total foodgrain
  • Foodgrain production
  • Expenditure on irrigation sector
  • Land degradation
  • Districts covered under drought prone programme
  • Flood damage
  • Flood management programme
  • Flood forecasting performance
  • Water demand
