The report presents flood plain mapping of Phulbari area within the flood plains of Brahmaputra basin in the States of Assam and Meghalaya using satellite data. Flood is a natural calamity in which most parts of the north-eastern region are ravaged. Management of the problem in these disastrous flood affected areas often requires flood plain mapping for protection and resource development. This has mostly being done in real time on the basis of time consuming and often hazardous ground based surveys.

Remote sensing methods in particular, with the advent of satellite era provide excellent periodic information in real rime for these areas. In fact, data obtained from satellite has now become the only reliable means for mapping the problem areas.

Phulbari, a problem area within the Brahmaputra flood plains has been undergoing continuous erosion through recurrent floods. Flood plain mapping has long been warranted to conceive a protection scheme for Phulbari.

The report attempts to map the flood plain of the area with remote sensing IRS 1A and 1B, 1:50000 False Colour Composite. Analysis has been carried out based on the delineation of pre and post monsoon periods of 1988, 1992 and 1996. Survey of India toposheets (1961) have been compared with the latest satellite data for the study of bank line migration of the Brahmaputra at Phulbari area. Extensive site visits were made for ground truth verification and interpretations from imageries.
