Devanahalli near Bengaluru became the first town in the country to get a faecal sludge treatment plant for the safe treatment and disposal of sludge collected from septic tanks and pit latrines. The plant is capable of treating human nightsoil without any human interference in an environment friendly and cost-effective manner. The plant will be maintained by the Devanahalli Town Municipal Council with external support from some not-for-profit organizations. 

 

The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to issue a notification banning the sale and use of plastic bags across the state by December 31, 2015. The Court expressed its view in response to a PIL filed by a citizen who sought improvements in Allahabad’s sanitation and cleanliness scene.

 

Dumping of solid waste around the Vaishno Devi shrine irks the National Green Tribunal

The National Green Tribunal has asked officials of the Vaishno Devi shrine board and the civic authorities appear before it regarding the dumping of garbage en route to the shrine in Jammu and Katra towns. The plea has said that a sizable portion of the waste is generated comes from the thousands of horses, mules and ponies deployed to carry the pilgrims to the temple. 

 

2000 complaints recorded on the Swachh Bharat app in Delhi on its debut

Within 24 hours of its launch, the ‘Swachh Bharat app’ recorded complaints of garbage and debris strewn across the capital city. Launched by the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporations, the app is expected to help in resolving citizens’ sanitation grievances and complaints.
