Fort Dauphin, Madagascar

Safe drinking water is one of the most important issues in emergency or development work, and there are growing career opportunities for experienced water and sanitation experts. While the principles of water and sanitation may be similar for both emergency or development situations, important differences exist, especially concerning methodology, beneficiary participation, scale and planning. The BushProof training therefore covers a wide range of options and approaches applicable for both environments. The training is quite intense and is given through a range of practical and theoretical sessions.

The training is invaluable to both those who are interested in starting a career in water and sanitation, as well as for those already working for NGOs and who find they have become more and more involved in water programmes, but lack the basic technical and theoretical background.

Practical sessions

While several theoretical courses are available, practical hands-on field experience is difficult to obtain. The BushProof training therefore focuses heavily on practical sessions, which include the following:
  • · Construction of hand-dug well in local village, including final pump installation
  • · Manual drilling
  • · Jetting
  • · Sieve analysis
  • · Measuring elevation
  • · Measuring water flow in pipes due to gravity and from pump
  • · Handpump operation
  • · Chlorine and alum jar tests
  • · Community mapping in a village
  • · Biosand filter construction
  • · Latrine slab construction (normal, dome)
  • · Water testing (chemical, physical, bacteriological)

Because of the number of practical sessions, participants tend to learn most if they get stuck in and get their hands dirty!

To give you a flavor of the training, we have some video clips and photos from the recent training in September available here: http://bushproof.biosandfilter.org/index.php?id=171

Theoretical sessions

In addition to the practical sessions, the course will provide a broad overview of the theoretical aspects of water and sanitation projects. Theoretical issues are linked to real life experiences of the facilitators throughout the course.

Teacher-student ratio

We will never have more than 15 participants per course, and therefore have a high teacher-student ratio, which we find is essential to allow individual feedback and tuition.

Language

The course will be in English, but francophone participants can be accommodated if they have a reasonable grasp of spoken English since at least one BushProof course facilitator will speak French.

Course fees & duration

The cost of the course is dependent on when you book, but is for 13 days and covers all tuition, handouts, resource CDs, lunch, coffee breaks, field trips & practicals, plus an internal flight within Madagascar: Early bird: 2,400 Euro (payment made more than 2 months prior to start date) Standard: 2,500 Euro (payment made between 2 weeks and 2 months prior to start date) Late snail: 2,600 Euro (payment made less than 2 weeks prior to start date - cash on arrival necessary if unpaid when course starts) The course fee does not include international airfares, travel or medical insurance, visa, accommodation, breakfast / evening meal and taxi cost from the accommodation to the training centre every day.
