The highlights of the January newsletter by South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People (SANDRP) are as follows:

  • Many inconsistencies in the EAC's approval of 775 MW Luhri Hydropower project, that is proposed to be built on Sutlej river in Himachal Pradesh.
  • Indian Biodiversity Congress lays stress on freshwater biodiversity conservation.
  • MoEF to amend Wetlands Rules (2010) to include main river channels in its definition of wetlands, in line with Ramsar Conventions.
  • To quench the thirst of people in Maharashtra, the government should stop diverting water from East flowing rivers to the West.
  • India presses China to have a water commission/an inter-governmental dialogue/ a treaty,  to deal with water issues between the two countries.
