  • Met data application - May 23,2012 - 14:46

    Dear Mr. Colmer,

You could use the Met data application we have in IWP. In this application, entire datasets for various meteorological indicators from 1901 to 2002, for any part of India, is made available for users, in a simple format
The following link takes you to the application - http://indiawaterportal.org/met_data/

The application is quite simple to use. You need to enter the required state and district in the relevant columns. Enter the data type ('precipitation' in your case), choose the period for which you need the data. You will be able to generate annual mean, monthly mean for each year as well as annual totals.

Click here for the 2004-2008 meteorological data extracted from the IMD website - http://www.indiawaterportal.org/node/7185

Apart from this, India Water Portal has recently launched a data finder http://www.indiawaterportal.org/datafinder where you can search for the data as per your requirement by adding specifications to your search. This search tool gives you the link of the source from where the data can be obtained and also describes briefly the contents of the document. I hope you will be able to get some useful information from this search tool.

  • Check for water pressure boosters - May 22,2012 - 17:58

If yours is a small apartment you can raise this concern and lay a separate line (a one inch line finally converging at a 1/2 inch will enhance the pressure)

There are pressure enhancers (shower power boosters) you can add to your pipes and shower if you get similar stuff in India too.

  • We focus on treating waste by using special in-house cultured microorganisms that are "probiotic" in nature and absolutely eco-friendly.

Septic tanks only partially treat sewage, discharging polluted water leading to ground water contamination. Also, septic tanks without proper treatment get clogged & filled with sludge which leads to frequent pump out by tankers which is a huge nuisance and unhygienic practice. Soak Pits get choked when their percolation action is hampered due to sludge and grease deposits.

We have solutions that utilize the existing tanks to treat the sewage using our special microbial culture. You can recycle treated water for gardening or discharge it into the ground water through the soak pit. Your existing septic tank can be utilized and modified (if required) to treat the waste water in an Eco-friendly and cost effective manner.

We would require the following details from your end to suggest a way forward - 1. Daily Flow of waste water (combined from toilets, bathrooms, kitchen , laundry etc) 2. Dimensions of Septic Tank Regards,

    Kush Agarwal +91-98998923242

  • Dear Mr. Rao,

The soak pits overflow when the percolation action is hampered due to excessive sludge and grease deposits. We have a microbial solution to these problems that not only help in restoring the soak pits but also enable you to recycle treated waste water for horticulture purposes.

It is a completely eco-friendly and an extremely cost effective solution. Your existing septic tank can be utilized and modified (if required) for the treatment.

We would require few details from your end to enable us to suggest the way forward-
    1. Daily flow of waste water (from toilets, bathrooms, kitchen, laundry etc)
    2. Dimensions of septic tank

    Thank You.

  • Dear Mr. Raghavan,

We offer biological treatment for septic tanks to enable recycling of waste water after treatment to be used for horticulture. Your soak pit is overflowing as it must have exceeded the percolation capacity due to sludge and grease deposits.

Our microbial solutions when inoculated daily, restore the clogged and choked soak pits and also enable you to reuse the treated water into horticulture, thereby reducing your fresh water demand.

Kindly contact us for further information.

    Dear Mr.Ram,

To give you any meaningful advice, one needs more details:
    1. What is the source of the water in your premises? Shallow well or bore well? What is its depth?
    2. What is the source of water in some of the neighbouring flats where the water is good? Also please mention their depths.

  • Recently I've given the sample of municipal water to a shopkeeper and he'checked it and informed us that our drinking water has a TDS of 367. So kindly suggest whether we should install only Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purifier or RO+UV?

I am confused, as I cant decide on what basis we have to install water purifier at home. It should be safe for drinking.

    Awaiting your reply.

  • Hello from India Water Portal - May 21,2012 - 14:22

    Hello,

Please get in touch with Naandi Foundation, a non profit organisation that has several offices in Andhra Pradesh: http://www.naandi.org/Ouroffices.aspx

They work to set up drinking water purification systems in rural areas, ensuring equitable and cost-effective delivery of drinking water. They may be able to help you arrive at estimates of how much a fluoride removal system may cost.

Alternatively you can also contact Manohar Rao from Arghyam at manohar@arghyam.org. He knows a lot about fluoride mitigation in Andhra Pradesh, having worked on a project in partnership with Outreach in Madanapalle.

  • Dear Experts

I am Srinivas from Hyderabad. I have dug a bore well at my home in Hyderabad and it has not been giving proper water - just 1/2" to 1" at the time of digging. Up to 35 feet there was very loose mud, after that we got stone up to 70-75 feet, then we encountered some type of water mud and continued. There was stone up to 100-105 feet, then water came just for 1/2" to 1" level. We dug deeper, but there was no water up to 200 feet, only stone powder was coming and we'd stopped digging.

The ground water level is very good, near my house two people are digging wells and they have got very good water level within 30-40 feet. But in the house opposite to mine, the person has dug up to 100 feet but still no water.

What can I do to recharge my borewell? Should I close the old one and dig a new bore in another place?

    Please suggest

  • Sir, I am from Chennai - Madipakkam. The bore well water in our locality is extremely salty which can be compared to sea water and sometimes even worse than that. When a water test was done by a whirlpool mechanic the fuse of the machine went 5 times and it took so long to find that out because when we tested our local panchayat water the fuse did not go off.

We are not able to use the water and is extremely bad. All the taps and bathroom tiles are spoilt. Please suggest how it can be treated. We are afraid that this might lead to skin diseases an other health complications.

  • Many of the facts are known to everyone since the problem is being experienced in day to day life when you get water smelling of sewage and days on end you do not get water in the tap.

I only wonder when our municipalities will have enough funds and willingness to solve these problems.

  • What is the TDS and hardness limits for drinking mineral water according to Indian standards, American, European and British standards? What is the level of TDS (when low) that will affect health?

    -Rasiklal
  • Yes you can. There is an instrument with a meter and a cable connected with rubber weight to measure the water level and metal weight which you can fix under the cable and measure the depth. I recommend you contact some hydro-geologist or drilling company as they will surely have this meter, it's much better than buying one

  • Dear all,

I have dug two borewell in Dindigul district in Tamilnadu up to a depth of 120 feet each. But in vain as I was unable to get water.

These water points were detected by local water diviners. As the soil in my place is a combination of black soil and red soil, after reaching red soil area the drilling machine was unable to drill further.

Kindly suggest whether to go for a well or continue with the same bore or to go for a new one.

  • Dear Mr. Kaushik,

The sulphate content in water is invariably expressed as the quantum of sulphate radical and so the TDS cannot be less than the sulphate content.

  • I believe it is good idea to have water meters in apartments where water is purchased paying high amounts of money. Users need to be responsible and made to pay for what they use. The question is about the costs involved in plumbing/pipework, initial and then recurring maintenance costs of the meter.

Is there any national plan/scheme where these meters are subsidised? If not, is there any standard/quality test report about availability/suitability and recommended price by manufacturer?

    Many thanks,
    Anand

  • Drinking boiled water is the best - May 18,2012 - 12:00

I am sorry about your baby son. I do not use any so called RO/A guards/other gadgets for my water purification at home. For last 20 years, my wife has been boiling part of the incoming fresh water (which comes for 2 hours in a day), for our drinking purposes. We have never had any sickness in our home for many many years.

Of course it is laborious and time consuming. After boiling, the water has to be filtered with a very fine cloth (four folded). Five liters a day is enough for four adults in our home. Of course the stainless steel vessel (dekchi) soon gets coated with scales and leftover TDS and that has to be removed from time to time.

Trust me there is nothing better than drinking water after boiling. This is accepted by the gadget manufacturers as well.
