Dynamic groundwater resources of Karnataka (2009) - Report by Department of Mines and Geology and Central Groundwater Board

This report by the Department of Mines and Geology, Government of Karnataka and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Southwestern Region provides information on groundwater resource available and the status of utilisation of groundwater in Karnataka as on March 2009, both on watershed (sub catchment) and taluk wise areas having 2008-2009 as the base year. The methodology is improved as the estimations are carried out on watershed basis for both command and non command separately than apportioned to taluks.

The report can be very useful for planning, decision making, implementation of minor irrigation schemes, financing well schemes. The report is helpful to concentrate on such areas where immediate protective measures are to be taken to conserve irrigation and drinking water supply in order to sustain groundwater resource.Read More

The relevance of traditional knowledge for health, well being and sustainable development - Indian Journal of Traditional Knowledge

This paper published in the journal Indian Journal of Traditional Knowledge is an attempt to discuss the traditional knowledge of elderly people, their role and highlights many areas where it can be useful for elderly themselves. At present, the loss of biological diversity and erosion of traditional knowledge systems (TKS) are issues of great concern. Most of these knowledge systems are unique and are often known only to a few individuals or communities. This traditional knowledge includes mental inventories of local biological resources, animal breeds, local plants and crop and tree species. Read More

Economic valuation of forest soils - Study published in Current Science

This study published in Current Science was designed to determine the effect of conservation activities carried out in the forests on soil fertility status and to calculate the precise amount of economic loss or benefit due to such changes in soil nutrient status.

The study area was located in Halol Range,Panchmahal District, Gujarat, stretching between long. 22°25′41″N and 22°29′06″N, and lat. 73°31′23″E and 73°35′35″E. Preservation plots present in the study area were selected for the current study.Read More

Of soils, subsidies and survival - A report on living soils by Greenpeace India

GreenpeaceThis report  by Greenpeace India is an effort to create the foundation for the understanding on living soils essential for sustaining agriculture. Soil is one of the basic natural resources that supports life on Earth. It is an ecosystem, which is a home to several living organisms, which make the soil alive and give it a good structure and texture.

A living soil ecosystem nurtures and nourishes plants by providing a healthy medium to take roots through a steady supply of nutrients. Use of chemical fertilisers disturbs the natural soil ecosystem and its indiscriminate use has resulted in the degradation of soil. A total neglect of ecological/organic fertilisation by policy makers, extension officers and farmers during the peak Green Revolution period has also added to the soil health crisis.

This report pools together scientific literature as well as farmers’ views on this issues as many a times, while studying issues related to soil health or while making policies related to it, the farmer, who is the most important stakeholder, is seldom consulted. The report has made an effort to rectify this grave inadequacy by including the farmer's perspectives in the academic processes like the social surveys, public hearings and workshops and in this final report. Every section of the report has a component from the existing scientific literature available and another one on the farmers’ opinion on the same area.Read More
