This circular by the Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Government of Maharashtra describes the need for participation of private institutions in operation and maintenance of the water supply schemes in case of 'A' class municipal councils.Read More

It argues that this is because civil bodies are facing many problems due to urbanisation and increasing demand from the residents. There is a need to increase efficiency in the water supply and sewage
schemes through participation of the private institutions.
The document describes the present situation and the need for involving private institutions as at present as per the Govt. water policy, water supply scheme is handed over to the Urban Local Bodies (ULB’s) for proper maintenance and repair. However the ULB’s are not able to maintain the scheme due to leakage of water and misuse of water. The failure of the scheme is due to the huge gap between income and expenditure. Due to the lack of sufficient funds for repairs and maintenance, ULB’s are forced to undertake new schemes.
The document further discusses the steps that need to be taken to make this possible and aspects to be finalised before making agreements with private institutions.

Gujarat’s agricultural growth story: Reality check and important lessons for water management – A paper by Institute for Resource Analysis and Policy

This paper by the Institute for Resource Analysis and Policy attempts a reality check on the ‘miracle growth’ in Gujarat’s agricultural production by looking at the gross value of the outputs from agriculture over a reasonably long period of time. The agricultural ‘growth’ seen in the recent past in Gujarat is nothing but a good recovery from a major dip in production occurred during the drought years of 1999 and 2000, because of four consecutive years of successful monsoon and bulk water transfer through the Sardar Sarovar project. The real ‘miracle growth’ in Gujarat’s agriculture appears to have occurred during the period from 1988 to 1998.

Estimation of rate and pattern of sedimentation and useful life of Dal Nagin Lake in Jammu and Kashmir - A research report by National Institute of Hydrology

The study determines rates of sedimentation and estimates the useful life of Dal-Nagin lake situated in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir using radiometric techniques. In spite of various ecological problems the lake is the largest freshwater lake in India. It has four major sub-basins viz., Hazratbal, Bod Dal, Garibal and Nagin. Dam break study of Myntdu Leska Dam in Meghalaya using DAMBRK model – A research report by National Institute of Hydrology

This report by the National Institute of Hydrology presents a study of the hypothetical failure of Myntdu Leska dam in the southern part of Meghalaya near the international Indo-Bangladesh border. The maximum water level attained by the dam break flood in the river downstream of dam has been calculated and ascertained for extent of submergence of the area.

Furthermore, the dam break flood wave characteristics at four different sections downstream of the dam have been determined for different failure characteristics. The sensitivity studies of the various parameters have also been done to know their effect over the movement of dam break flood wave.Read More
