NREGA and rural water management in India: Improving the welfare effects – An occasional paper by IRAP

This occasional paper by Institute for Resource Analysis and Policy (IRAP) looks at improving the welfare effects of National Rural Employment Gurantee Act (NREGA) and rural water management in India. NREGA is being eulogized by many in the academic, development and policy arena as a “silver bullet” for eradicating rural poverty and unemployment, by way of generating demand for productive labour force in villages and private incentives for management of common property resources.

Groundwater contamination and rural water treatment in Gujarat: A discussion paper by CAREWATER

carewaterThis discussion paper by Carewater INREM Foundation deals with groundwater contamination and rural water treatment in Gujarat. The State is characterized by varied hydrogeology and vast areas are faced with typical groundwater quality problems like fluoride. Much of the coastal groundwater is saline while the alluvial tract is marked with inland salinity.Read More

Possibility of revival of dug wells in hard rock India through recharge: A discussion paper by CAREWATER

carewaterThe discussion paper by Carewater INREM Foundation on possibility of revival of dug wells in hard rock India through recharge is based on a field study across ten districts of the country. The study seeks to understand how localized governance of groundwater in hard rock areas is to be pursued through pricing (water, energy), legal regulation and community institutions. Water supply augmentation and demand management are both to be taken care of, directly through regulation or through indirect instruments such as pricing.Read More

Duel among duals - Popular science of basaltic hydrogeology in a village of Saurashtra - A paper by CAREWATER

Carewater INREM FoundationThe report by Carewater INREM Foundation deals with the duel between popular science used in decision making by farmers and the formal science of hydrogeology that is based on scientific data collection. These two parallel streams of knowledge exist together, sometimes complement, and at other times are at conflict. People’s knowledge on hydrology is not ‘dying’, but thriving and growing well, refreshed continually by interfaces with science. In hard rock areas, the high hydrogeologic variability makes observation as important as theory since it is localized, pervasive and relevant to the needs of people.Read More

Regional model for annual runoff estimation - A research report by National Institute of Hydrology

The report presents a seasonal rainfall-runoff model developed for the Saurashtra region as well as parts of Narmada river basin. The successful planning and implementation of water resources projects require reliable data on volumetric runoff. It is not feasible to have discharge stations in all the river basins of interest given resource constraints. Therefore, regional rainfall-runoff models are preferred. The utility of such models can be improved if rainfall-runoff models for different regions are developed using data specific to the regions.Read More

Adaptive approaches to groundwater governance - Lessons from the Saurashtra recharging movement - IRMA

This research paper by Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA)  examines the Saurashtra recharging movement as a response to growing water scarcity conditions and increasing agrarian-based livelihood challenges.Read More

A variety of socio-technical actions have been carried out by the movement participants, which have resulted in increased agrarian-based livelihood incomes, primarily through increased groundwater availability and with it an improved quality of life. The paper identifies the key drivers of the recharging movement and the factors that have sustained it.
