Dynamic groundwater resources of Karnataka (2009) - Report by Department of Mines and Geology and Central Groundwater Board

This report by the Department of Mines and Geology, Government of Karnataka and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Southwestern Region provides information on groundwater resource available and the status of utilisation of groundwater in Karnataka as on March 2009, both on watershed (sub catchment) and taluk wise areas having 2008-2009 as the base year. The methodology is improved as the estimations are carried out on watershed basis for both command and non command separately than apportioned to taluks.

The report can be very useful for planning, decision making, implementation of minor irrigation schemes, financing well schemes. The report is helpful to concentrate on such areas where immediate protective measures are to be taken to conserve irrigation and drinking water supply in order to sustain groundwater resource.Read More

Management of landslides and snow avalanches - National disaster management guidelines by National Disaster Management Authority

LandslideThese guidelines by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on management of landslides and snow avalanches aim to reduce the enormous destructive potential of landslides and minimize the consequential losses by institutionalizing the landslide hazard mitigation efforts. 

It is necessary that the hazard must first be recognized, the risk analyzed and an appropriate strategy developed at the national level to mitigate its impact. To achieve this objective, the NDMA initiated a series of consultations for drafting the national guidelines on landslides and snow avalanches to guide the activities envisaged for mitigating the risk emanating from landslides at all levels. The guidelines include regulatory and non-regulatory frameworks with defined time schedules for all activities. It is envisioned that all national and state disaster management plans and policies for landslides will be formulated and implemented keeping in view the overall framework of the guidelines.

Decentralized wastewater management – An overview of a community initiatives in New Delhi - Vigyan Vijay Foundation

This paper by Ajit Seshadri, Vigyan Vijay Foundation highlights the poor sanitation situation in India and argues that centralized approaches to wastewater treatment have had limited success and there is a need to make wastwater treatment people centric and effective through the use of decentralized systems such as DEWATS (Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems). DEWATS are locally organized and people driven systems that typically comprise a settler, anaerobic baffled tanks, filter beds of gravel and sand, and an open pond.
