A critical assessment of climate change impacts, vulnerability and policy in India - Paper published in Present Environment and Sustainable Development

This paper published in the Present Environment and Sustainable Development critically analyses the impacts and vulnerability of Indian economy to climate change and analyses India’s efforts in addressing and reducing the vulnerability of its natural and socioeconomic systems to climate change and enhancing the adaptive capacity of the same under uncertainty.Read More

Climate: Observations, projections and impacts - India - A report by the Met Office (UK)

This report by the Met Office, UK describes the findings of a study that aimed at compiling observations, projections and impacts of climate change in the context of India, as a part of a project that aimed at compiling scientifically robust and impartial information on the physical impacts of climate change for more than 20 countries. This was done using a consistent set of scenarios and as a pilot to a more comprehensive study of climate impacts that aimed at providing evidence on how the climate has already changed and the potential consequences of these changes on the future.Read More

Adaptation to climate change with a focus on rural areas and India - A document by GTZ (India)

This document published by the GTZ has been produced in the context of an ongoing project in which the GTZ and the Ministry of Environment and Forests are working together to devise ways of dealing with the inevitable impacts of climate change, which aims to strengthen the capacities of rural communities in India to live with climate variability and change. The work includes supporting governments of four partner states of Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, local communities and other relevant stakeholders in identifying, developing and carrying out adaptation measures in pilot regions. This document provides an overview of the main issues in current adaptation discussions and recognised adaptation options in a number of thematic areas.Read More

Tearing through the water landscape - Evaluating the environmental and social consequences of POSCO project in Odisha - A report by ESG

Odisha POSCO reportThis report by the Environment Support Group critically enquires into the circumstances and the basis for the approval of the mega POSCO project in Odisha by providing  historical evidence that highlights the rich biodiversity of the Jagatsinghpur region over time and the nature of relationships between communities and forests.

Based on evidence from this inquiry, the study presents a critical analysis of the environmental and social impact information of POSCO's steel-power-port components to expose the fact that regulatory agencies have inadequate information on the short term and long term impacts of the project on the basis of the information that the company supplied to them. Reverse Osmosis plants for rural water treatment in Gujarat - A study by CAREWATER

carewaterThe report by Carewater INREM Foundation deals with Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology, which is emerging as an important solution for drinking water treatment in rural Gujarat. RO plants with capacity ranging from 10 litres per hour (lph) to 6000 lph are now supplying drinking water in several hundred villages of the State. Small sized plants with capacity < 20 lph are used by individual families whereas medium to large sized plants (>100 lph) are being used for public consumption.Read More

Seasonal mapping of water bodies along the Andhra Pradesh coast using satellite data – A research report by the National Institute of Hydrology

The report presents the seasonal mapping of water bodies along the Andhra coast using satellite data to analyze the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon variations in the reservoirs. Water resources development be it construction of reservoir, anicut or irrigation canal, calls for mapping of the various water bodies to throw light on its behavior in different seasons in order to plan a judicious water management scheme.

Remote sensing methods are considered to be more appropriate than conventional methods for collection of such information owing to their capability to provide broad synoptic and repetitive coverage of the area in a multi-spectral mode.Read More

Salt water intrusion in coastal aquifers - A research report by National Institute of Hydrology

In the study saltwater intrusion processes in a hypothetical homogenous and multi-layered coastal aquifer system are simulated using the United States Geological Survey (USGS) finite element model for saturated-unsaturated fluid density-dependent groundwater flow with energy transport of chemically reactive single species solute transport (SUTRA) for different boundary conditions and aquifer parameters.

The saltwater intrusion profiles for steady-state or transient conditions are obtained and analyzed. The effects of changes in the permeabilities of aquifers and aquitards, changes in the influx at the boundary, and changes in dispersivities in medium on the saltwater intrusion process are investigated.Read More
