Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS)

Decentralized wastewater management – An overview of a community initiatives in New Delhi - Vigyan Vijay Foundation

This paper by Ajit Seshadri, Vigyan Vijay Foundation highlights the poor sanitation situation in India and argues that centralized approaches to wastewater treatment have had limited success and there is a need to make wastwater treatment people centric and effective through the use of decentralized systems such as DEWATS (Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems). DEWATS are locally organized and people driven systems that typically comprise a settler, anaerobic baffled tanks, filter beds of gravel and sand, and an open pond. The open pond or the polishing tank recreates a living environment for the wastewater to clean itself, naturally.Read More

Decentralised wastewater treatment in developing countries - A handbook by BORDA

DEWATS handbookThis handbook published by Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA) is an outcome of a project titled “Low Maintenance Wastewater Treatment Systems - LOMWATS; Development of  Technologies and Dissemination Strategies.” The project had been financed by the Commission of the European Union, with substantial contribution by the State Office for Development Co-operation of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen from October 1994 until April 1998.

This book aims at a target group, which is typical for decentralised technology implementation and consists of  people who are aware of the general problem and know something about possible solutions. However, their knowledge is too general on the one hand, or too specialised on the other to master the very typical problems which go together with decentralisation.Read More
