Decentralised treatment and recycling of domestic wastewater - An integrated approach to water management - A pilot project - CPCB (2008)

This report by the Central Pollution and Control Board (CPCB) describes the various intervention measures chosen to reduce the ecological footprint of the Sangamam housing project at Auroville. These measures include water harvesting, recycling and waste management. 

Auroville is located in Tamil Nadu, south India, about 12 kms north of  Pondicherry and 150 kms south of Chennai/Madras, adjacent to the Coromandel Coast. Auroville’s development is closely related to that of the surrounding villages. Integrated Low Cost Sanitation Scheme - Revised guidelines by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (2008)

The document presents the 2008 guidelines of the Integrated Low Cost Sanitation Scheme by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation. The objective of the scheme is to convert or construct low cost sanitation units through sanitary two pit pour flush latrines with superstructures and appropriate variations to suit local conditions (area specific latrines) and construct new latrines where economically weaker sections household have no latrines and follow the in-human practice of defecating in the open in urban areas. This would improve overall sanitation in the towns.

To set in motion a process that would sustain a short-term project, the Aga Khan Development Network drew on guiding principles developed from its experiences of projects in disaster reconstruction and more comprehensive development programs: high-quality community-based interventions, working on multiple fronts, and fostering linkages with strong institutional partners.

At the core of the project’s disaster management and mitigation strategy was the creation of empowered and highly motivated community-based organizations; their participation was critical in shaping and implementing initiatives that would best serve the needs of the vulnerable, particularly women and children.

Rajasthan urban housing and habitat policy and guidelines for action plan - Urban Development and Housing Department (Government of Rajasthan) (2006)

The  mission of the Rajasthan Urban Housing and Habitat Policy (RUHHP - 06) is:

  • To provide shelter to all the sections of the population
  • To ensure sustainable development of human settlements
  • To ensure a better quality of life for the population
  • To adopt a multisectoral approach and involve and use the potential of all levels of stakeholders.

The RUHHP-06 is broadly in consonance with latest National  Housing and Habitat Policy-2005 (Ist draft has been issued).
