Unable to insert submersible pump into 410 feet borewell; stuck at 245 feet - What should I do? What is the solution?

Share 2

We got a 410 ft borewell drilled with the water source at 280 ft. We tried to insert a submersible pump on day 8. But there was problem in clearing the motor at 245 ft and it was getting stuck at that level. Hence the pump and the whole assembly had to be withdrawn.

What could be the problem? What is the best solution for it?

I am eagerly waiting for experts' comments.

Dear Dr Mukund,

What is the diameter of the borewell? You probably have a 4.5 inch borewell and are trying to install a submersible pump . Before we come to any solution as to why it is not going down, have you tried to see if a weight tied to a rope goes below this point, and at what level is the standing water level in the borewell?

In some cases the stone from the wall of the well juts out and reduces the effective diameter of the borewell and does not allow large diameter pumps to slide past

In other cases soft material is encountered while drilling and this lands up entering into the well and it fills up the borewell.

If it is the first case with some difficulty the pump will go down if you try to rotate the pipe a bit, if that does not work then probably you need to get a drilling rig to clear it up.

In the second case even if it is cleared the problem will recur and foul the motor and pipeline.

More cannot be said at this time with the limited information provided

With regards
Anil

I had the same problem in Rammurthy nagar, Bangalore. The drilling was 6.5 inch deep and we immediately inserted pump and it went inside. Now after this, there seems to be some tripping problem with the motor.

Totally disappointed with this, have already spent 2.5 lakhs and I'm not ready to spend more on this.
