Do I need to waterproof my entire terrace to have a terrace garden or can this be avoided by using planters?

What is the required soil depth to plant mango and sapota (chickoo) trees? Can they be grown in concrete planter boxes?

Also I would like to know if can I avoid waterproofing the entire terrace by using planters. If I have to waterproof the terrace, how do I go about it? Can I do it by myself?
