Freshwater Jewels - An article from Sanctuary Asia

In this article, the author Vidyadhar Atkore, describes his experiences of studying freshwater fish in the Himalayas and informs that freshwater ecosystems are under tremendous pressure, not just in the Himalayas, but across the country.
Modern methods of fishing are much more destructive than traditional methods of fishing, besides other man made activities such as mining and urbanisation leading to pollution of sand beds, which further adds pressure on freshwater ecosystems.
The author argues for the urgent need to initiate concrete steps towards restoration of freshwater ecosystems and for the need to make use of schemes such as the NREGA Scheme & Act by the Government of India under which local people can be involved for restoring rivers and associated aquatic habitats.
