Job Title: Senior Associate-WATSAN

Recruitment agency: Centre for Decentralised Local Governance, Avantika Foundation

Training support: Arghyam & WASSAN

Job location: Bangalore (with frequent travel to Gram Panchayats in Mulbagal taluka, Kolar district)

Role:

The candidate would be a full-time employee of Avantika Foundation and primarily responsible for developing and implementing water and sanitation solutions in partnership with Gram Panchayats in Karnataka.

The role will broadly cover the following:

An in-depth understanding of the 'current status of panchayats in water & sanitation'. This would involve analysis of baseline for water & sanitation & data collection wherever required

Work with panchayats for them to understand what is required to address WATSAN issues in a sustainable manner - this will require not just training, but developing relationships with key members and developing the understanding

Ensure water and sanitation priorities are included in the GP and line department plans- NREGA/ Agriculture/ 14th Finance Commission and other relevant funds

Map and lay down processes of implementation, and roles of key agencies, including line departments/GP/Watermen and VWSC

Facilitate process of implementation in the GP- keep track of funds availability so that implementation is not delayed because of lack of funds; provide technical support as well as liaison with concerned departments.

Document success, failures and learning of WATSAN initiatves in the GPs of Mulbagal to enable creation of models for other panchayats.

Qualifications and requirements:

Candidate should have a passion for development issues and willingness to work on water and sanitation issues

Academic qualifications in social sciences, environmental sciences, public health preferred.

Prior work experience (7-10 years) in the development sector with a demonstrated ability to manage mid-level projects required.

Strong communication skills (written and oral) in English and Kannada required

Willing to travel and work in rural areas and ability to adjust to tough field situations.
