Preservation restoration or otherwise of the existing tanks in Bangalore metropolitan area - Report of the Lakshman Rau expert committee (1986)

This report of the Lakshman Rau Expert Committee released in 1986, provides detailed notes about all the tanks in Bangalore's metropolitan area, provides general proposals for their preservation including specific recommendations in regard to some important tanks, and concludes with suggestions relating to implementation of the recommendations.

In order to examine all aspects of the problems relating to preservation, restoration or otherwise, of the existing tanks in the Bangalore Metropolitan Area, with a view to maintaining a desirable environment, the Government of Karnataka in 1985, constituted this Expert Committee with Lakshman Rau (Retd IAS) as its Chairman and member representatives from the State Pollution Control Board, Bangalore Development Authority, Department of Mines and Geology, Town Planning Department, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Bangalore Urban Art Commission, Department of Forests and Minor Irrigation Department, for submitting proposals for preservations, restoration or otherwise of these existing tanks.

The Committee in its foreword notes that with the rapid growth of Bangalore's population and proliferation of buildings, roads and vehicular traffic, water sheets (tanks) and trees becoame valuable assets to improve the health and quality of life for Bangalore's residents.

This report and its detailed observations hold true even today, after 25 years of its release.
