Improving water quality through recharge of open wells - VP Thuruth - Trissur - Kerala - The Mazhapolima intervention programme

This case study describes the work taken up in the coastal riverine island of VP Thuruth in Thrissur district, under the Mazhapolima program, in the context of severe water scarcity and deteiorating water quality in the island. Post the intervention, the water quality and availability improved significantly. 

Mazhapolima was a participatory well recharge programme initiated by the Thrissur district, under which domestic water sources were recharged with rainwater harvested (usually) from roof tops.

The case study starts with a general background of the drinking water issues being faced, describes the results of an assessment of the hydro-geological situation, past experiences in drinking water interventions and learnings from these, the step wise activities initiated to implement rooftop-based rain water harvesting by the implementing organisations and the impact and benefits achieved. The note ends with a pictorial description of how rainwater harvesting improves water quality and availability.
