About the Water Hackathon A Water Hackathon is taking place in Bangalore, India on October 21st, 22nd and 23rd 2011. An initiative of the World Bank, this event aims 'to seed a new community that brings together software engineers and water experts to identify critical global challenges and project-specific problems in order to develop software to respond to them.
The Water Hackathon is a two-day marathon software coding event in multiple global locations, bringing together software developers from all over to hack on real-world water problems. The event is to be simultaneously conducted in 5 other locations across the globe. World Bank is partnering with the
Indian Institute of Human Settlements (IIHS) and
India Water Portal to organise and conduct the Water Hackathon in Bangalore for the South Asia region.
Why this Hackathon? Mobile phones are an increasingly relevant medium to the communities that we are trying to serve. This would give the water community a great platform for converting some of the ideas into a prototype or in some cases even a finished product.
Call for IdeasWe are seeking ideas for developing software applications for mobile phones that will be useful for the water community and/or for the general public. More specifically:
- Past examples (successful or unsuccessful) of mobile-phone applications related to water
- Ideas for mobile applications that might be useful for the water community or specific target groups like farmers, plumbers, fishermen, researchers, community workers, government employees, etc.
- Ideas for mobile applications for the general public
When writing up your ideas:
- Please describe the problem in full and include a description of how the solution would work ideally.
- Please include any data or general information that would be needed to create this solution.
- Describe the intended audience and what mobile device it should work on. For example, analog phone, SMS, smart phone, etc.
