Living rivers, dying rivers: Bagmati river in Nepal

The fifth lecture in the ten-part series titled "Living Rivers, Dying Rivers" was delivered on the subject “Bagmati River” by Dr. Ajaya Dixit, Nepal Water Conservation Foundation and Dr. Dipak Gyawali, Former Minister for Water Resources in Nepal and Vice-Chair of the Technical Committee of the UN’s World Water Assessment Programme. The lecture was held on November 18 2011 by the India International Centre, New Delhi and highlighted the complex challenges faced by the much abused river because of untreated sewage, solid waste, industrial effluents, illegal encroachments and rampant construction along the river banks. 

 

A critique of hydropower in the Northeast: Potential and harnessing analysis

This hydropower study was commissioned as an input to the study “Development and Growth in Northeast India: The Natural Resources, Water, and Environment Nexus” by the World Bank. The main objectives are to analyse the hydropower potential in the Northeast, and to provide an overview of the hydropower development options in the Northeast with regard to water resources in the different river basins, including consideration of flood control and irrigation.
