What is Ladakh Carrier?

If you are planning for a long bike ride, go for Ladakh carrier. I don’t know why it is called so. One reason could be that it is used mostly by riders who ride to Ladakh. It is tailored to be fitted on bullets. People prefer them over saddle bags mainly for two reasons.

  1. Cost - It costs about Rs.850 (including Rs.50 fitting charge). Saddle bags cost almost thrice (Around Rs.2200)
  2. Volume of luggage - You can load it up with about 40kgs of luggage. It has a platform that extends backwards and supports various types of bags. You can use conventional rope/thread or bungee cords.

The only disadvantage is that it cannot be fitted and removed as easily as saddle bags.

My Bike Fitted with Ladakh Carrier

Now the next question is - where can you get them?

I tried to get them fabricated in Bangalore. Nobody had the necessary ‘die’ and a custom made carrier could cost almost twice the actual cost. I borrowed mine from my friend Raghavendra. But when it broke last week, I went to Karol Bagh in search of it. I got a new carrier from Khajanchi Seat Cover, 57, Nai Wala, Karol Bagh, New Delhi - 110005. Phone - 011 - 6585 9826, +91 9210867883, +91 9811625210.

While getting the carrier fitted, I came to know that you can order the carrier through phone and these people can courier it to you. But you have to pay a minimum of Rs.400 towards postal charges. The parcel is sent through train and the allowed weight limit is upto 40kgs. Each carrier weighs about 4kgs. So one can order upto 10 carriers. 3-4 friends/enthusiasts can order the carrier together and save on postage.
