Reality about realtime updates
Dear Friends,
I intentionally bought a BSNL connection as to get maximum coverage and give as much realtime updates as possible. But just a few minutes from Pathankot towards North, my cell started to display - “Emergency calls only”. I though J&K has poor BSNL coverage. But when we reached Jammu, Airtel and Vodafone phones of Diwakar, Srikanth and Silje started to work. I restarted my phone 4 times. I thought I had ran out of currency etc. etc. No hopes
Next day my friend Santosh and his wife Priya joined us at Jammu. When I explained my problem to Santosh, he told me that out of state pre-paid SIM cards do not work in Jammu and Kashmir and Northe Eastern states. It has been almost 10 days. I could update neither Twitter nor smsGupshup group. I also have a Reliance dat card - But I could not access any network so as to send some updates through phone. We passed through several towns which had BSNL n/w. But I could not do much there. Then web passed through places which did not even have electricity (more on these places in my blog), forget about network coverage.
Now I am in Delhi. Srikanth and Diwakar left for Bangalore this morning. Priya and Santosh would stay back in Delhi and Silje would continue to travel with me for as many days as possible.
Before leaving Delhi I have plans to come up with small stories on each of my interactions, upload few photographs and GPS tracks. So please keep watching this space - let us start a meaningful conversation on water.

good piece of information, this!
Looking forward to the updates.
yes. But local pre-paid cards do work there. So it is important to keep that in mind. Also, BSNL is the only connection that can get you maximum coverage in these areas.
Today, All postpaid cellphone connections work in Jammu and Kashmir. For prepaid users, you need to buy a local sim at J&K as roaming is not allowed to Prepaid users.
Earlier, postpaid users also were not allowed to roam in J&K except BSNL. Later Airtel opened its network and allowed Airtel Post paid users to roam in J&K. But after Dishnet wirless (Aircel) commenced, all postpaid users are allowed to roam in J&K. Soon you may see Hutch/Vodafone in Oct 2008 at J&K.
