About the Rain Centre

The Chennai Rain Centre, the first of its kind in the country, is a one-stop information and assistance center on rainwater harvesting. The Rain Centre is a model house on RWH and also a place to learn about various designs, cost estimates and a list of contractors to implement RWH in independent houses, flat complexes, offices, factories, Institutions etc. The Centre, which is open to all, charges no fee for its services to the citizens, thanks to the funds received by the Akash Ganga Trust through donations.

Theme of the workshop

The Rain Centre in Chennai run by the Akash Ganga Trust has been involved in the last ten years in popularising rainwaterharvesting methods by providing free advice and assistance to citizens of Chennai.

The centre intends to spread the awareness of these systems to the larger population by conducting one-day workshops in Chennai. The faculty will comprise of individuals who have had long field experience in installing the simple eco-friendly systems.

This will go a long way in providing sustained water security to town and city dwellers by making them more self-reliant in their water needs and less dependent on the water authorities.

Programme details

It will compromise of 3 technical sessions, followed by a field visit. The details of the speakers is as follows:

  • Rainwater harvesting – An overview, its need and relevance in urban areas, methodology and success stories:Sekhar Raghavan, Director, Rain Centre
  • Water sufficiency through simple methods of rainwater harvesting and recycling of used water: Indukanth Ragade, Alacrity Foundations
  • RWH – In different soils and salient features of groundwater exploration and exploitation: J. Saravanan, Thrust Geo-consutants Ltd.
