Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council

The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) is making a concerted Global effort to accelerate progress towards provision of safe water, sanitation and hygiene. It has launched the WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) Campaign which aims to raise the commitment of political and social leaders to achieving these goals all over the world.

Total Sanitation Campaign

Poor sanitation and hygiene is one of the major causes of poor water quality, as  bacterial from human excreta find their way into drinking water or directly into our bodies through unclean hands. The Government of India’s  Total Sanitation Campaign is a major effort to address rural sanitation problems, with the final goal being a toilet for every household.

The document was made by the Department of Drinking Water Supply, Government of India.

There are many families living in rural areas who have inadequate access to proper sanitation. This leads to many diseases among the rural residents. There is lack of awareness about the benefits of proper sanitation, and in addition, the sanitation infrastructure is inadequate.

Jal Manthan, the  newsletter produced by Water and Sanitation Program, features some of the strategies that were formulated in a workshop. It also reflects the efforts made by different states of India and valuable lessons on rural sanitation.

Clean India campaign

School children and youth can take collective action to monitor water quality in their neighbourhoods.  The Clean India campaign, an initiative of the NGO Development Alternatives took this approach of engaging youth in understanding and monitoring water quality in their local areas.
