Campaigns - Wastewater
The Nai Disha campaign
Scavengers did not have an alternative due to poverty and social systems. The Nai Disha campaign of Sulabh Sanitation Project, initiated by Dr. Bindershwar Pathak, made successful inroads of change, probably the very first time in modern India. It is igniting hope for a dignified and sustainable future for scavengers, especially women, by training them in alternative employment friendly vocational skills. The growing number of rehabilitated scavengers is indicative of a gradual change in the mindset of a country used to scavengers since the rule of the dynasties.
