Water for Life

Water for Life is an exciting new joint initiative of OzGREEN and the Duke of Edinburgh International Award for Young People (IAA) in the Asia-Pacific region. Water for Life is based on OzGREEN’s MYRiveR and Youth LEAD projects and involves young people in assessing the health of the environment, developing their own vision and action plans and implementing eco-social projects they have designed. OzGREEN’s involvement with the Clean the Ganges Campaign began in 1992 and focused on providing assistance to the education campaign.

Total Sanitation Campaign

Poor sanitation and hygiene is one of the major causes of poor water quality, as  bacterial from human excreta find their way into drinking water or directly into our bodies through unclean hands. The Government of India’s  Total Sanitation Campaign is a major effort to address rural sanitation problems, with the final goal being a toilet for every household.

There are many families living in rural areas who have inadequate access to proper sanitation. This leads to many diseases among the rural residents. There is lack of awareness about the benefits of proper sanitation, and in addition, the sanitation infrastructure is inadequate.

Jal Manthan, the  newsletter produced by Water and Sanitation Program, features some of the strategies that were formulated in a workshop. It also reflects the efforts made by different states of India and valuable lessons on rural sanitation.
