Anupam Mishraji’s books
Posted on June 19, 2008 | Filed Under Books, Indian Languages
Shri Anupam Mishra, Gandhian and environmentalist is a remarkable person. He lays no claim to copyright for his own books and (similiar to open source software) it has increased the dissemination of his message. During a recent visit to his office at Gandhi Peace Foundation in New Delhi, he showed several different editions of “Aaj Bhi Khare Hai Talaab” brought out by all kinds of individuals and publishers across the country. He recounts the story of how a impoverished young person was inspired to translate it into Punjabi and get it published.
We hope showcasing “Aaj Bhi Khare Hai Talaab” and “The Radiant Raindrops of Rajasthan” here on the Water Portal will reach his ideas to a wider audience. “Aaj Bhi Khare Hai Talaab” is in the process of being translated to English. “The Radiant Raindrops of Rajasthan” is the English translation of “Rajasthan Ki Rajat Boonde”. The translation was done by Maya Jani of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology. While we were unable to contact Ms. Maya Jani we express our thanks here for the work.

More about the books:
“Aaj Bhi Khare Hai Talaab” is his acclaimed book in Hindi on the traditional ponds in the villages. The book lays stress on the importance of the rural model of water management which by providing precedence for water over land, and also by tapping into the ability of the community to work for the common good provided a near perfect system of water managment. Detailed images and descriptions of rural water harvesting structures in India are collated in this book. The book serves as a knowledge bank on rural water harvesting techniques and technologies, helping in the upkeep and adaptation of the same to modern times and also to preserve the knowledge systems contained there in.
“The Radiant Raindrops of Rajasthan” is the English translation of “Rajasthan Ka Rajat Boonde”, about the traditional water harvesting and storage structures of the western desert areas of Rajasthan. Through a deep respect for the preciousness of water that informed every aspect of their lives, and ingenuinity in catching and storing every available drop of water, the people here have brought the desert to life in a way that is not true of most other desert regions of the world.

“THOSE ‘IGNORANT PEASANTS’ KNOW MORE ABOUT WATER THAN ENGINEERS”
Former business and environmental journalist Nitya Jacob has undertaken an unusual task — an ecological travelogue across the Indian subcontinent, focussed on water. The Delhi-based
writer’s findings are stark. After writing a book on the subject, he says that in spite of surplus water, and one of the world’s richest traditions of managing it, India’s water crisis has reached critical levels.
Says Delhi-based Jacob’s new book is called ‘Jalyatra: Exploring India’s Traditional Water Management Systems’. It notes: “The 5000 years worth of traditional knowledge which made India one of the richest countries in the not-too-distant past has been forgotten and is one of the main reasons behind the crisis.”Original Review on India Water Portal Blog, Click here
Frederick Noronha (FN) interviewed Jacob about the book (Penguin, India, 2008, Rs 295), his findings and more. Read more

New book — “Governance of Water”
Posted on February 23, 2008 | Filed Under Announcements, Books

GOVERNANCE OF WATER
Institutional Alternatives and Political Economy
Edited by VISHWA BALLABH, Xavier Labour Relations Institute, Jamshedpur
Governance of Water: Institutional Alternatives and Political Economy is a timely, relevant book that makes a case for reforming water governance in India through not only re-orientating policy priorities and approaches, but also restructuring the institutional framework away from the state and village dichotomy. The book has eminent scholars explore the issue from various angles—neo-classical and institutional economics, deliberative democracy, public administration, collective action and political economy perspectives.
The book argues that a possible link between the larger structure of the economy and the transaction costs in water governance, as well as relations with the democratic polity as it actually functions, need to be understood clearly; the research on the transformation of water governance requires in-depth analysis to make the process more transparent, participatory and accountable to the larger society.

Send a photocopy of your water bill, win a book by Dr. Anupam Mishra
Posted on November 26, 2007 | Filed Under Arghyam, IWP, Announcements, Books, Indian Languages
India Water Portal is working with Vishwanath Srikantaiah of Rainwater Club (www.rainwaterclub.org) to draw attention to the pricing of water in towns and cities. To this end we are collecting water bills from cities and towns across the country. Water bills contain information about the kind of charges and tariff structure of that particular municipality or corporation. So they are a nice way to both get this information from all major cities and create understanding about water pricing.
India Water Portal requests you to send us both sides of your recent water bill - either a xerox copy or a scanned copy. Even better will be if you can send the original.
The first person sending their bill from each city of the country will receive a free copy of Dr. Anupam Mishra’s book – “Aaj Bhi Khare Hai Taalab” (“Ponds Are Still Relevant”). Make sure the xerox/scan is clear and legible.
Scan can be sent to :portal@arghyam.org
Original or Xerox to :
India Water Portal, 840 5th Main 2nd Floor, Indiranagar 1st Stage, Bangalore 560038,
Ph: 080 4169 8941
(it will be useful if you also send us a emai note at portal@arghyam.org letting us know that you have sent the bill by post)
Read an informal analysis by S.Vishwanath of Bangalore’s water tariffs:
http://www.indiawaterportal.org/tt/urban/case/bill_reading.html
Read about Dr. Anupam Mishra and “Aaj Bhi Khare Hai Talaab” :
http://www.indiawaterportal.org/Network/interview/ngos/Anumap_eng.html
In addition to the water bill, your comments on the water supply and pricing in your town/city may be useful. Please add your comment at the link below, or send it to portal@arghyam.org. If you city/town doesn’t send you a regular water bill, we’d like to know about that too.
